marketing doo-ah’s

I visited the shop in Zurich last week on Thursday and while discussing stock markets, sales figures and Italian postal non-services, we came up with a new product.

A new product at least for the shop in Zurich and for myself when serving the press. In principle it is very simple: The shop in Zurich gives samples away, for free, the longer the more, and clients usually ask how much they are… When ordered over the web shop, we charge 4 Swiss Francs per sample for 2. 5ml (it says 1.5 but is closer to 2.5 ml indeed) . This Thursday I have met friends and made a discovery set:

All perfume samples in a white box with a silver ribbon around it.

Pascal, the shop owner sees it, and wants it. For his clients. Because it is so much nicer. So we came up with the idea of preparing these sample boxes, but I think I need a flyer going on top of the box with the samples. I imagine either a 1/4 A4 flyer (like you know it from my fragrances) or I imagine 1/2 A4 size, folded in the middle and being like a two page brochure, with some Doo-Ah, Doo-Ah, Doo-Ah, Doo-Ah, Doo-Ah, Doo-Ah, Doo-Ah, Doo-Ah, Doo-Ah marketing groove on Tauer Perfumes.

(more on doo-ah’s here on 6lyrics.com and here, on youtube….)

You know…not a lot of text, just one sentence per page maybe. With a few pictures. As we can not ship boxes like this to the US, we would stick to Zurich shop to start with. Then we will see. (as it is more than 2 cm thick Swiss postal non-services charges 18 Francs, and thinks they can safe themselves from privatization. Ha! Can’t wait for DHL offering regular mail services for letter size items!)

Now, the challenge…. what pictures and what German text. I am thinking things like discover…., hand made….., art of perfume making…., inspiring… but somehow the pictures and text don’t flow.

Maybe it is because of the latest orange flower trial that I mixed, and keeps me breathless and that made the W.factor follow me like a dog as I immediately diluted an aliquot because I couldn’t wait, knowing that I need to wait for two weeks at least as things get better when matured and I sprayed it on a strip and the W.factor goes like “oh my God, what have you sprayed in this room? This is so good!”

The box can maximally fit 9 samples ;-)

Dear Andy, this in great marketing motion (as well as these two geniuses of a jazz).

I like the brochure on two pages more. It is the especial project and it should differ a little externally from your usual samples.

I am very intrigued and interested orange flower trial and… unsuccessfully I inflate nostrils. The consolation is brought at this time only rubj.:-)

I this saw yesterday on TV panorama Zurich, city centre, river buses, multitude fountains - it a magnificent show. Football fans have not broken your vital rhythm?

    I agree with Vlad.

    [Vlad, darling-
Would you like to marry me ? I’m 1/2 Belorussian- mama was from Minsk ! The other 1/2 is from Strasbourg/ Baden Baden ….
    Please say YES !]
Andy- MAKE him say yes !

How lovely to smell wondrous enough, to make W. chase you around the flat, after so many years !
    Warms my heart…

    MWAH !

Andy, I just enjoy reading al this…this burst of creativity! And while listening to doo-ah doo-ah doo-ah, I thought: this sample box is really Andy’s Jazz..:-)

  4. Andy Says:

Dear MarianneTM (TM for Trade Mark? ;-)
That was exactly the idea… Andy is doo-ah-ing
    Sending jazzy vibes to you
    Dear Chayaruchama
I know from reliable sources that Mr. V. is in very good hands already. I am sorry. You will have to do without and your 1/2 Belorussian Mama s side will not be complemented. But then… maybe you want to look for the Ukraine? I have no details about Jeff, but….

    MWAH!

    Dear Vladimir
Thank you so much. Football was pouring down on me like rain on Goretex. I am rather impregnated. Staying dry like a beetle belly.

  5. Kelley Says:

Andy, don’t quote me on this but I have photos of Chaya’s wedding. Honey, I thought you were married!!!!! Please quit hogging all the good men!

Andy, I too am looking forward to the orange flower trial. I LOVE NEROLI!

  6. Vladimir Says:

Dear chayaruchama, your offer very flatters my self-esteem.
I regret, but I 24 years as am not free…

Dear Andy, it is good, that we have Goretex. This remarkable invention of mankind..

It’s a nice idea to make a discovery sample set of Tauer perfumes. Does it mean farewell the glue pistol? Or the samples will remain to be sold separately as well?

If I buy a sample I want to make an impression of the perfume. What I’d prefer to see on the flyer are mini copies of original flyers and not just any random doo-ah ;-) A collage with smiling cowboy, rose, abstract desert, mysterious guy in a jeans etc. And as for the text – the same what you use on another side of a flyer – a description of the perfume – the myth in a bottle. And if you put a fragrant pyramid there as well I will be completely happy. Well – those are not original ideas, but more expectations from the samples.

From another side – what would you like to be discovered? Your own world? The myths behind the fragrances? Some of your ideas? Is there something you’d like to say to us? I have re-read your small stories from the fliers – still find them beautiful and perfect doo-ah’s for the set. They make me wonder how would the freedom of open pastures smell or how does the hot breath of Maghreb desert feels.

Nine places for the set – sounds promising. Already made six plus Vetiver and Chypre Rose and… Orange Blossom? Well – I think there will come a blog about making of the second discovery set at the end of the next year ;-)

  8. Marianne Says:

TM for trademark ?! LOL, nobody ever came up with that one… not even my parents..;D

TM are my other two names that are only peeping up in my passport. I am not so good in inventing blognames so here is why. But I am still Marianne…doo-ah doo-ah doo-ah

..and Jazzy vibes to you too!

  9. andy Says:

    Dear AromaX
    ok…quite some comments and questions.
The box with the flyer is just the packaging for the samples as a set. The sample will still be glued on the flyer. And on the flyer you would then find all the little its and bits.
But the flyer or folded 1/2 A4 is my chance to tell folks that these fragrances are truly niche, hand poured, designed and manufactured the way fragrances should be: with love!

By the way: I hate those pyramids. They are so …linear. As if a fragrance top note ends there on the top of the pyramid! I realize always again, that our clients do not know the story behind Tauer Perfumes. A sample set might be an opportunity to tell.
    Just thinking loud…

  10. andy Says:

Dear Kelley. So you love Neroli…then you are my man, too! I LOVE neroli

  11. Ben Says:

    What a great idea, andy!

Today I’m wearing Lonestar Memories from a sample that I got from your website last fall (inspired to put it on, I should add, by all your LM blogging in recent days). I hadn’t worn LM for a couple months and it’s more wonderful than I remembered. Can’t wait for the Vetiver (and the Rose Chypre and the orange blossoms). You’re a treasure!

  12. andy Says:

    Dear Ben
I am just right now this instance on my computer, fooling with Photoshop. Love these colors….more tomorrow, I guess. I thank you for your enthusiastic words. This helps me a lot when the pictures just won’t flow ! I wish you a wonderful evening.

  13. AromaX Says:

Thanks for your patience and explanation, Andy. It’s much more clear now.

From your answer it seems pretty clear that you’ve chosen for a folded flyer and why.

I completely agree with you about pyramids - too tight and fixed for something lively and changable as a fragrance. Why don’t you describe fragrant notes in different ways for each perfume? Like geometrical shapes with names of the notes touching or covering each other for Incense extreme? Or seawaves giving an idea of 3 (or 2 or 5) different depth levels for each “fragrant layer”? I see fragrant notes written on each detail of your image by L’air du desert Marocain. It’s just an initial thought that can be widen if you like it ;-)

  14. andy Says:

Actually, I love the idea of waves (or dunes for the matter of the L’air du désert marocain), as in fragrances you have these waves coming in and leaving again just to come back again.

Thank you for this great imaginative picture!

  15. AromaX Says:

You are welcome. Thanks for sharing and opportunity to participate ;-)

  16. Sabina Says:

Breathless indeed. Lovely orange flower. I like the idea of the folded flyer very much, with you telling about your company and your visions behind the ‘fume. I love reading your expressions of your dreams on the flyer, love reading a story or story line that takes me away. Greetings from here to there in Zuerich.

  17. Sabina Says:

Forgot to add: if I remember correctly, all your bottle caps are gold - so, I’d go with a gold ribbons, perhaps? Liebe Gruesse.

  18. andy Says:

    Dear Sabina
Gold might be much better indeed. Especially, if the gold ribbon is contrasted with an color like blue or violet, unfortunately I am not that good in texting these days…. it is simply to wet outside ;-)
